We all already know that gaming & social media addiction in teens and youngsters is one of the burning issues in every society. Similarly, parents, gardeners, elders, and teachers are very much worried keeping in view the above-mentioned addiction among teens. Not only that but also we as a society are getting more and more disturbed due to increasing “Internet Gaming Disorder“ (IGD) among younger generations.
Additionally, social media and gaming addiction among youngsters have left some severe and adverse physical and psychological effects on their health.
In this blog article, I have addressed some of the common issues concerning social media and gaming addiction. At the same time, I have suggested viable and research-based solutions to cope with this burning issue. So let’s now know about them.
What is the Social Media & Gaming Addiction?
Social media and gaming addiction is a process of overusing cell phones, computers, tablets, I-Pads, and other gaming electronic gadgets. Similarly, this addiction and overuse leave some serious physical, mental, and psychological health impacts on its users. Additionally, anxiety, depression, social isolation, low self-esteem, misbehaving, and poor eye sighting are some of the common health hazards due to social media and gaming addiction.
What Are the Effects of Gaming & Social Media Addiction on Teens?
Apart from physical, mental, and psychological health problems, gaming and social media addiction causes teens to waste their time, lose money, and stay away from important social interactions. Similarly, their schooling gets disturbed, and as a result of gaming or social media addiction, students perform below the marks in their studies. Additionally, they get frustrated, depressed, emotional, and mentally unstable.
Why Do Teens Easily Fall into Gaming & Social media Addiction?
Multiple reasons cause teenagers to fall easily into gaming and social media addiction. They find it very much interesting, exciting, and engaging as they start using it. Similarly, they have fresh blood, a young mind, and energy hence once they develop their interests and get engaged it is hard for them to come out of it. Additionally, lack of check and balance and ignorance from parents and guardians cause them to easily fall into this trap.
Does Parents/Guardians’ Ignorance Cause Gaming & Social media Addiction Among Teens?
The answer to this question is certainly a big yes. In other words, mostly, teens fall into gaming and social media addiction due to unnecessary freedom and lack of check and balance by their parents or guardians. Additionally, some parents have hardly any time for their kids due to several reasons. However, the lack of regular interaction between kids and parents has some serious negative impacts. Lack of parental care and love leaves serious psychological impacts on teens. This is why teens sometimes take serious steps including committing suicide.
Research Statistics About Social Media & Gaming Addiction
Various renowned institutions including World Health Organization (WHO) are doing research at the world level. These international organizations are gathering data at a massive level and trying to find out some viable solutions. However, my collected statistics suggest that around 350 million people across the globe suffer from gaming and social media addiction. Surprisingly, around 60% of 350 million are youngsters addicted to it.
How Many Students are Addicted to Social Media & Gaming?
Well, in advanced countries of the world, around 47% of students are addicted to the internet, social media, and gaming. This is a huge number which is quite alarming for advanced countries. Similarly, in under-developing countries around 29% of students are addicted to social media and gaming. Social media and gaming addiction are one of the biggest hurdles that cause students to perform poorly in their academics.
How Many Hours Cause Social Media & Gaming Addiction?
Experts and psychologists are of the view that more than 6 hours of constant use of social media and the internet may lead to addiction and suffering from depression. However, various studies suggest that students use social media and the internet for about 8 to 9 hours a day which is a very dangerous situation. Keep in mind that social media, the internet, and gaming is not necessarily harmful to teenagers. Only its excessive usage causes addiction and health problems.
What Are the Solutions Against Gaming & Social Media Addiction?
There is always a solution to every problem. Similarly, there are different effective and result-oriented solutions against social media and gaming addiction. Some of the common and research-proven solutions are mentioned below.
- Ensuring proper planning, scheduling, & time management.
- Regular check & balance by parents and guardians.
- Engage teens through sports and social interaction.
- Give regular and enough time to your kids.
- Arrange family meals and enjoy foods collectively.
- Ask teens to walk a bit and exercise regularly.
- Make sure students don’t carry cell phones during school time.
- Collect cell phones from your kids at night and ensure their proper sleeping.
- Arrange picnic parties and travel with your kids occasionally.
- Be a best friend to your kids and listen to them attentively.
- Never punish them nor be very strict with them; &
- Make them understand if they make mistakes and set priorities for them.
