Sydney’s Mercedes Benz Australian fashion week has announced the first plus-size runway show, to be held on 15 May.
A new plus-size runway show at Australian fashion week will feature clothing in sizes 14 to 24 – a first at a major fashion event in the country. The show will feature clothes from national and international brands, including Platypus Shoes and swimwear label Bettina Liano.
What do you think about this new plus-size runway on Australian fashion week ?
I have to say, I’m really impressed with this new plus-size runway show. I didn’t think it was possible for a plus-sized person to look so good. The models definitely have the right attitude and know how to carry themselves. The clothes are also very fashionable and chic. We’re all about embracing our bodies here at Glamour, so I think this is a great idea.
What are your thoughts on the “plus-size” show at Australian Fashion Week?
Some commentators have argued that the plus-size show is a step forward. It suggests that society is becoming more inclusive and accepting, and it’s a sign of progress when a model is represented in a size that better reflects most women’s body shapes.
But I think this misses the point: there’s no reason to think that this change will serve any particular group of people. Plus-size models are still being chosen for their looks, not for their size. The only difference is that the clothes being sold to them have been tailored to fit their bodies, rather than being made for everyone to fit within some universal standard.
What matters is not whether the clothes look good on these women, but whether they look good on everyone.
Do you think plus-size models should be used for shows to display clothes for the average sized women?
I think plus-size models should be used for shows to display clothes for the average sized women.
When I was younger, I used to go to Australian fashion week shows with my mum, and I wished there were a variety of sizes in the fashion show that could have represented me. If I had seen a model that looked like me on the catwalk it would have been very inspiring for me.
When we see models who are very skinny, it often makes young girls or boys feel bad about themselves and think they’re fat. It makes them want to try diet fads which can be very dangerous to their bodies.
I think it’s time we saw more average size models on the catwalk.
Do you think this is a positive step in promoting diversity in fashion?
I love black women. I love their beauty, style and confidence. In my opinion they are the most attractive women in the world.
I would like to see more black models in fashion magazines because representation matters and there is a growing interest in black culture.
I’m not interested in only seeing white models on magazine covers or on social media. I want to see more diversity and have more choice when it comes to fashion and beauty.
There are some amazing black models in the industry who have made a name for themselves including Alek Wek, Adut Akech, Duckie Thot, Naomi Campbell and Leomie Anderson. These are women I look up to as role models but I think we need more diversity within the industry as a whole.
What do you think are the benefits of a plus-size fashion show?
I feel like this would be a good deal for the women and girls who feel better about themselves by seeing their body type represented. It might also be good for the clothing companies. However, I worry that it might send the message that larger people are less attractive than smaller people.
I would love to hear your thoughts on this!Recommended2 recommendationsPublished in
